Meaning
Lit. “shives” is a way to refer to something unattractive, of very low quality, often something embarrassing. This might be an object, an act or even a person. The term still sounds as if taken out of a teenage slang, even though present in Polish for at least two decades.
The original primary meaning of the word covers refuse left after processing flax, the plant traditionally used for textile production in Poland (hence October, the month in which flax was processed, is “Październik” in Polish). Shives are useless as a source of fibres but can be reused to produce particleboard (“płyta paździerzowa”). Which is the where the the term “paździerz” originated. Such boards, the cornerstone of IKEA furniture, are a cheap and unreliable alternative to real wood an hence treated with contempt.
You call “paździerz” a product not worth its price, a cheap knockoff that won’t last a day. Figuratively, you can also refer this way to a poor quality movie or book or a service not satisfying your needs. And if you find a person’s appearance or character repulsive, you can also use this word. But never directly in their presence – they would feel offended.
