Meaning:
Lit. “a cart’s fifth wheel” which is used to describe a completely unnecessary or even useless thing or concept. It’s pretty much the same meaning the English expression has but in Polish, it’s always used with the cart and just “piąte koło” sounds strange, even though understandable.
You can use this for people too and some people will even apply it to themselves as parting words, before leaving a group they not feel welcome in.
Examples:
Harry Potter, sierota i podrzutek, od niemowlęcia wychowywany był przez ciotkę i wuja, którzy traktowali go jak piąte koło u wozu.
Zachodniopomorskie tym się odróżnia od np. Warmińsko-Mazurskiego czy Podlaskiego, że kolei nie traktuje się tutaj jak piąte koło u wozu i pociągi kursują tak, że jest w tym jakiś sens i logika.
Na etapie pisania wniosku o dofinansowanie wskaźniki realizacji projektu bardzo często są traktowane jak “piąte koło u wozu“. Niestety takie podejście ma swoje konsekwencje na późniejszym etapie – w okresie trwałości.
