Meaning:
Lit. “a gardener’s dog” which is the phrase in Polish to describe a person not willing to share something even though he/she does not use it. So either following some rules very strictly or out of pure malice. The dog in the manger.
The origin seems to be clear: an angry dog guarding an orchard and chasing out anyone willing to taste the fruit, even though it can’t enjoy it itself.
This expression can be applied on any field, in everyday life as well as official communication. It is widely understood and anyone branded a “pies ogrodnika” will feel offended.
Examples:
W Senacie przepadła poprawka zgłoszona przez PiS, aby ustalić stałą b. wysoką opłatę za użytkowanie złoża gazu ziemnego powodująca nieopłacalność wydobycia gazu łupkowego. Pies ogrodnika – sam nie zje i drugiemu nie da.
„Nie interesował mnie dopóki nie zobaczyłam go z inną”, czyli o kobiecym syndromie psa ogrodnika.
Muszę przyznać, że mega zazdroszczę tym, którzy dostaną go za darmo, ale cóż, nie będę psem ogrodnika, niech się chociaż inni ucieszą.
