Sajgon

Meaning:

Lit… “a Saigon”, ie. the old, traditional name of the largest city in Vietnam. It is invoked by Polish people to describe an extreme, usually highly unwelcome situation.

You can use it to say your team at work has much more to do it can handle. Or that a torrid rainfall changed streets into water streams. Or that a Ddos attack put your bank’s website offline while you urgently need to transfer money to your subcontractor. This name matches most situations like these and most Poles below fifty understand it.

I assume the origin of the expression is the capture of the South Vietnamese capital by the North on 30 April 1975, which caused tremendous panic and exodus among anyone with ties to the anti-communist forces or the USA. This panic is what the expression refers to.

Examples:

Wielkie plany, włożone miliony i klops. Stary pustostan zamienił się w nowy pustostan. Z zewnątrz widać, że dewastacja postępuje. W środku musi już być niezły Sajgon. Aż wierzyć się nie chce, że ktoś władował tyle kasy i nic z tym nie robi.
