Świecić oczami

Meaning:

Lit. “to shine with eyes”. Polish has no equivalent of the world “glare” so the expression sounds pretty unnatural, as if someone’s eyes were really glowing or sending floodlights into darkness.

And what it actually means? It’s used when one person feels ashamed or embarrassed for what another person or a group did (and tries to defend them and deflect/negotiate a punishment they deserve).

“Nie będę (więcej) za ciebie świecił/a oczami” is what parents tell their children if they expect to or have heard news about their misbehaviour. This means that they are annoyed but also that they expect their children to grow up take responsibility for their deeds – and will make sure this actually happens.

Examples:

Obyś miał coś dobrego na swoje usprawiedliwienie, bo ja nie będę za ciebie świecił oczami, jeśli wyjdzie na to, że to twoja sprawka.

Rok później, kiedy był już szefem SKW, Nosek „pojechał na tę konferencję i świecił oczami“. Musiał tłumaczyć między innymi, że pracownicy WSI „nie współpracowali z rosyjską agenturą”.

Duże zastrzeżenia do jakości usług SPA. Zamówilismy hammam nieświadomi, że wykonanie zabiegu dla dwojga przez jednego fizjoterapeutę było nieporozumieniem. Fizjoterapeuta świecił oczami i zrekompensował niedogodności wydłużonym masażem.
