To Kaplica

Meaning

Lit. “it’s the chapel” – as in the funerary chapel in which funeral mass is performed for a recently deceased person to be buried right after.

The term is used to signify that there is no hope in the matter discussed and you need to give up. It usually either follows a statement that a bad thing has already happened or might happen – and as a consequence the cause is definitely lost.

This idiom belongs to colloquial Polish, however, should be understandable by most native speakers. The primary meaning of the verb is both a small Christian temple as well as a part of a church building devoted to a specific saint or funded by a specific family or person.

Examples:

Super ważny mecz dla Lechii. Najważniejszy w całym sezonie. Jeżeli przegramy, to kaplica i koniec marzeń. Jeżeli wygramy, to pierwsza ósemka znowu znajdzie się w naszym zasięgu. Do boju, Lechia Gdańsk!
