Meaning
This strange colloquial word is used as a placeholder for an object you don’t know or don’t remember the name of. Its use is similar to the French “ce machin” or English “widget” and it also brings a comical element to your sentence: I am talking about this strange and not really important thing, I don’t even know how to call it but you know what I mean.
The origin of the word is German. The Polish “wihajster” is a phonetical transcription of “wie heißt er?” – how is he called? Funnily enough, Polish features some more words that can be used as placeholders in a similar manner: “ustrojstwo” (from Russian), “dynks” (German, again), “dzyndzel” (genuinely Polish). “Ustrojstwo” is often used for large groups of objects. For example, you could call a Patriot missile system an “ustrojstwo” if you had no idea what purpose it serves.

Papierow nigdy nie było, były wihajstry do zmiany switchy, ale sam zauważyłem pakując, że nie ma wihajstra i obcięto zestaw gumek. Nie pytałem się o to, bo od początku to był zestaw budżetowy, domyślam się, że trzeba było bardziej przyciąć koszty, żeby utrzymać cenę.
