Lit. “as over a grizzly bitch”, which is usually preceded by the verb “jeździć” – to ride, run. The literal meaning is to run somebody over (with a car) as if the poor animal. The figurative meaning is to constantly slander, offend or curse someone, to voice a worst possible opinion of a person.
Lit. “as Reksio (would) ham” which usually is preceded by a verb signifying biting or eating. Together they form expression meaning you would definitely fancy eating something. Well, at least literally as the only context Poles use it in is being physically attracted to another person and willing to engage in sexual acts with her/him. This willingness is usually purely hypothetical as the phrase is mostly thrown by one chum to another when seeing a pretty girl on television. It probably is not that popular amongst women but can be used by either gender.
Lit. “to caw” – as crows do. If this verb is referred to a person then this person is being accused of being extremely pessimistic and always having a worst possible outcome in mind. This is why other, more optimistic, people taking part in the same enterprise often say “nie kracz” – don’t caw, don’t discourage us.
The expression is very popular among Poles and is the only meaning apart from the literal one. It might stem from crows’ cawing being a bad omen.
Lit. “to have a snake in the pocket” which refers to somebody being very thrifty, or even, stingy. Poles readily apply this to inhabitants of my hometown Kraków who are widely known to save every penny they can. And so, such a person is under no circumstances willing to put hand in their pocket as if the said reptilian was sitting there waiting to bite them.
Lit. “that’s where the dog lies buried” which seems to have been adopted from German and is present in multiple other, not only slavic or germanic languages. It’s used to point at the cause or the focal point of whatever is being discussed. Quite often one of people in a discussion jumps in with this expression as soon as he or she hears about whatever seems to be a key factor. It therefore also serves to stress one’s own opinion.
