Meaning:
Lit. “a little monkey” is a Polish idiom for a small (0.1-0.2 litre) bottle of strong alcohol (mostly 30-40% vol.) – either a pure or flavoured vodka. You can buy them in most “monopolowy” shops and also in some supermarkets.
This format is very often consumed by alcoholics in need of a boost – also early in the morning before going to work or about any other daily business. As such “małpki” are officially a scapegoat and a target for Polish Health Ministry – but obviously the Finance Ministry loves them as they generate huge tax revenues.
The name got reportedly coined in Warsaw even before World War I and then was applied to even smaller bottles of 0.08 l. Such a small amount was supposed to make one feel a little silly, as a happy primate. Later on, in the communist Poland, the norms got increased and the “małpka” was used for larger 0.25 bottles (or “ćwiartka”/”a quarter”). Since the 90s the standard dose reduced.

“Małpka” będzie kosztowała 12 zł — Przysłowiowa połówka, która jeszcze czas temu jakiś kosztowała 20 zł, teraz faktycznie poprzez podwyżki zbliża się do 30 zł albo 25-26 zł, po Nowym Roku dwucyfrowe podwyżki na pewno będą, bo tak wzrosły koszty energii, koszty wszystkich środków wytworzenia.
Mężczyzna wyszedł ze sklepu w centrum Kielc, wypił małpkę i siadł za kierownicę forda – taką scenkę zobaczył we wtorek policjant z oddziału prewencji. Interweniował, choć miał akurat wolne. Uniemożliwił 34-latkowi odpalenie silnika i wezwał patrol.
