Meaning:
Lit. “to hold one’s tongue behind the teeth” – to keep a secret, to keep one’s lips sealed. Used especially when there is a secret indeed. But can also mean a general quality of a laconic and/or distrustful person.
The expression comes up is particularly often when criminal actions are involved an it is the police one needs to hide the information from. So an arrested criminal who “trzyma język za zębami” is respected by his associates.
Using it in other contexts like: business secrets/NDAs, extramarital affairs is fine as well and will be understood by virtually all adult Poles. Other Slavic languages also have this expression.

Śledztwo na ten temat zostało jednak umorzone, związku z brakiem dowodów i świadków – każdy trzymał język za zębami.
Donald Tusk zdecydował się w końcu ostro powiedzieć, co tak naprawdę myśli o brexicie. Długo trzymał język za zębami, ale wreszcie nie wytrzymał.
Jest to cnota nad cnotami trzymać język za zębami.
