Meaning
Lit. “The German cried as he was selling” is the ultimate sales pitch employed by Polish dealers of cars previously used beyond the western border.
It is supposed to mean that the offered drive is in an excellent state, reliable, economic, fast and also easthetically pleasing. Hence the previous owner had it so hard to part ways with it that he cried in the process.
The other classic used in such trade scenarios is “jeździł tylko w niedzielę do kościoła” – “he only drove it to the church on Sundays”. Plus “nie był bity“. As any vocabulary used by a used car salesman, they are treated with an utmost precaution. Actually, now if you hear them from anyone, they are mostly just a joke – or an ironic comment if the car is in a really bad shape.
